MARTÍN LAZO CUEVAS: A Call for Calm

A Call for Calm
Editorial Column
By Martín Lazo Cuevas, President and Founder of Comunidad Mexicana, INC
The protests sparked by the recent immigration raids in Los Angeles have deeply shaken our community. The
images circulating across the country reveal not only the pain, outrage, and helplessness of those
witnessing the detention of friends, family members, and neighbors, but also the risk that our emotions
might be pushed toward actions that could bring even greater harm to our people.
This moment is undeniably sad, painful, and uncomfortable. It is so because it reveals the fragility with
which many of our brothers and sisters live each day, despite their immense contribution to the country they
now call home. It is so because it brings to light the deep wounds that still remain open in the migrant
history of our peoples. And it is so, above all, because an unmeasured reaction could leave scars that
affect not only the present, but also the future of our children and the generations that will follow.
As President and Founder of Comunidad Mexicana, INC., I issue a firm and respectful call for calm. To our
Mexican community across the United States, and to our brothers and sisters from Central and South America,
the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa: this is not the time to respond with fury or to fall into provocation. This
is the time to show that we are a mature, conscious, organized community with long-term vision.
We understand the pain. We feel it. But we also understand the historical responsibility we carry. Every
step we take now is being watched by millions—not just by governments or the media, but by our children, who
are looking to us for guidance, example, and hope.
The fight for migrant dignity is not won in a single day or a single street. It is won with organization,
with strategy, with peaceful determination, with unity, with community leadership, with civic
engagement—and, above all, with vision. It is won by building bridges, not burning roads. It is won at the
root: through education, culture, values, and memory.
Our community has endured. We have overcome the most difficult moments. Today is no different. But to
succeed, we must act with intelligence, with emotional discipline, with respect—for ourselves and for
others. We cannot afford to lose what we have built over generations. On the contrary: now is the time to
protect it.
To the authorities, we ask for respect, legality, and humanity. To our families, we ask for prudence, unity,
and wisdom. And to community leaders in every state, county, and city, we call on you to rise with the firm
voice of reason, guiding our people through organization and dignity.
This call does not come from fear, but from commitment. It is not resignation—it is clarity. Because the
story of the peoples who resist with intelligence is the story of the peoples who endure.
Now more than ever: unity, calm, and vision.
